MSHSL Important Message Regarding Fall Activities for the 2020-21 School Year
Posted August 5, 2020
The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) has announced the following offerings for high school fall sports: Girls Tennis (9-12), Girls Swimming and Diving (9-12), Boys and Girls Cross Country (7-12), and Boys and Girls Soccer (9-12). Registration will begin immediately for those sports as well as Marching Band and Cheer.
View more information from the MSHSL Board of Directors meeting regarding Fall Return to Participation.
MSHSL fall sports Football and Volleyball, along with MHS Performance Dance, will not have a fall competition season as they have been moved to a modified Spring Season. We will get more information on what that looks like at a later date. Additionally a fall waiver was passed so these sports will have access to coaches similar to what has occurred over the summer months. A decision about middle school athletics will be forthcoming in the coming weeks.
Girls Tennis (9-12th), Girls Swimming/Diving (9-12), Boys and Girls Cross Country (7-12), and Boys and Girls Soccer (9-12) were approved for play with reductions to the total number of games and the length of the fall season. (30% reduction in the total number of events and a 20% reduction in the number of weeks to the regular & postseason). Games & travel will be limited to “Conference/District” schedules only. Participation in tournaments and invitationals is prohibited. Sports will be allowed 1-2 games/competition events per week. No limitations on practice at time. More information on what postseason will look like for each fall sport will be shared at a later date, but at this time it appears that state and section play will be different than in the past.
This fall will represent many changes. During the registration process a new step has been added for parents/guardians to sign a 'COVID Waiver, Release, and Agreement for Participation’ and an ‘Extracurricular Activity Transportation Waiver and Release.” Please read these waivers very carefully as you prepare for the season.
Registration for Girls Tennis (9-12), Girls Swimming and Diving (9-12), Boys and Girls Cross Country (7-12), Boys and Girls Soccer (9-12), Marching Band and Cheerleading will open immediately. To register, please click on the following link: https://www.minnetonkaschools.org/activities, choose High School, click on Registration under either Athletics or Activities. Then follow the instructions on the registration homepage.
Please note that the District will continue the safety protocols that have been in place during the summer waiver period, including a COVID preparedness plan that has guided 8 weeks of successful contact as an activities department. As information changes the District will continue to provide updates.
Greetings MHS Students, Families and Supporters,
First of all, thank you for your patience and flexibility as we work out the details for the 2020-21 school year. I wish I could say it is over, but, unfortunately, responding to the often daily changes that Covid-19 has brought will likely be our new "normal" for some time.
We understand the challenges our students, educators and coaches have endured these past several months. The way the entire MHS community pulled together and rose to the occasion has been awe-inspiring. Our MHS class of 2020 took the hardest hit this past spring, beginning with the shift to online classes. Then came the disappointing cancelation of spring sports, prom, Seniors Serve, commencement ceremonies and the all-night senior party. Your class will forever be remembered for its resilience and grace. On behalf of the entire Minnetonka Schools staff, we are incredibly proud of you and know this experience will make you stronger and more compassionate individuals.
As we continue to evolve with Covid-19, rest assured we are working diligently in the MHS activities office to ensure each student-athlete has a memorable 2020-21 school year, however that may look. We understand the importance activities participation plays in the academic, social and emotional growth of our students, and the health and safety of our students and staff is our number one priority. We will continue to provide a variety of extracurricular opportunities under the guidance of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL). Several adjustments have already been implemented by the MSHSL, including the postponement of volleyball and football until spring. Additional fall sports will go on as planned, but you may see an abbreviated season.
While we don't know what the rest of the school year will look like, we will continue to keep you informed via email, district website and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter) as the plans unfold in the coming weeks. You may also visit the MSHSL website “News” page, https://www.mshsl.org/about/news/league-news, at any time. And please don't hesitate to contact me with your ideas or concerns.
Thank you for your continued patience, flexibility and commitment to our students. Have a great school year and GO SKIPPERS!
